One of about 57,000 dahlia cultivars worldwide, this dahlia features gorgeous glowing red blooms on compact plants. Perfect for beds, borders or containers, plants require 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day, plentiful water, mulch, and fertilizing once a month to mid-August. Dahlias are annual bulbs and thus can be dug and saved over the winter: remove them after the first frost, wash away excess soil, clip away the foliage then cover in sawdust. They are actually tubers: the Aztecs ate them! The hollow stems can be used as straws for water, as the Aztecs did, but that means plants benefit from staking as well.
