How to select the best houseplant potting soil

Your substrate (soil) has to be adapted for the type of plant you are putting in the pot. Potting mixes usually contain varying degrees of topsoil, peat moss and perlite or vermiculite. Retailers have developed a line of specialized potting mixes that are most effective.

Before putting your substrate into the pot, dampen it lightly using 3 parts soil for 1 part warm water.

All purpose potting mix

Cactus and succulent potting mix

For potting succulent plants belonging to various families such as cactaceae (cactus), crassula (crassula, kalanchoe, echeveria, sempervivum), certain lily plants (haworthia, aloe vera).

  • Mix made of sphagnum peat moss and sand that promotes fast water drainage while maintaining the ideal moisture level for for cacti and succulent plants.

How much potting soil to use

The amount of potting soil needed depends on the diameter of the pot. Calculate approximately:

  • 10 cm: 0.5 liter
  • 20 cm: 3 to 4 liters
  • 30 cm: 9 to 10 liters
  • 40 cm: 22 to 25 liters
  • 50 cm: 55 liters
