A fairly exotic looking succulent plant that must be grown indoors in more northern climates, it is low and slow-growing, producing beautiful, glossy 3 inch ‘rosettes’ with triangular leaves that emerge green, but turn a dark purple that is nearly black. Each rosette will produce a number of offsets, the ‘chicks,’ which can be divided and transplanted. Dark red flowers appear on stalks in late fall. Basic care involves removing dead leaves from the bottom of the plant and light watering, taking care that water does not accumulate in the rosette, since that may cause rot or fungal disease. Good drainage is essential, as is 3-4 hours of direct sunlight.
