Long stalks of fragrant, purple-blue flowers in a continuous bloom are a huge attraction for butterflies, hummingbirds and all the kinds of insects you want in your garden. Blooms are abundant, making them ideal for borders, flower beds and even containers. Easy to grow, low maintenance, heat tolerant, fairly pest and disease free, and deer resistant: the ideal perennial! Plants form a mound with shiny, deep green leaves less than 12 inches high, from which 12-18-inch flowering spires emerge. Full sun is preferable, and well-drained soil. Periodic deadheading is necessary. Give the plants a midsummer reboot by pruning hard. Blooms from early summer to frost.
